Cleaning Your Window Treatments

When it comes to taking care of your window treatment, there are multiple options to choose from. Consideration must be given to the type of window treatment that one may have. Different types require different cleaning methods and solutions.

Cleaning window treatments are important as it will:

• Promote longevity. In the long run, when there is a regular schedule in place to clean window hangings, the product will last longer. Some curtains, shutters, etc. tend to fade over a period of time if not cleaned properly and in a timely manner. Cleaning will keep the coverings looking and smelling fresh.

• Provide a healthy environment. Over a period of time, window treatment will collect dust, grime, or mole, which can be emitted in the air, resulting in asthma, allergies, and other unhealthy respiratory ailments. Fresh air is good for breathing in any environment, especially areas that are enclosed.

• Cost effective. Replacing window treatments on a regular basis can add up dollars and become very costly. Cleaning them will be far less expensive than replacement, in particular when it comes to custom-made or the more expensive window coverings.

Cleaning Window Treatments

Regardless to whether they are fine linen, tailored-made drapes, shutters or window blinds, keeping them clean does not have to be a difficult task. Different types of window coverings oftentimes require a different approach. Listed below are some examples.

• Blinds. Window blinds are found in almost every home because of their inexpensive price tag, multiple colors that are available, and the simplicity of cleaning. There are different approaches to cleaning blinds. One way of cleaning is to vacuum them to remove dust and dirt. To remove grime from plastic blinds, an all-purpose cleaning solution can be sprayed on them and then use a brush to remove substance. Also, placing them in a tub of hot water and Clorox or bleach, then allow them to soak for a couple hours, will bring about sparkling clean results. If the blinds are fabric covered, dry cleaning will be the best procedure to use. Wooden blinds shouldn’t be washed in water, as they may warp as they dry. Instead a weekly dusting with a feather duster or a vacuum cleaner with a curtain attachment should suffice.

• Shutters. Shutters are an expensive window covering investment, and care should be given to what procedure should be used in cleaning them because they are stained in different finishes. Water can cause damage to the wood; therefore, it is best to use a wood cleaning application.

• Drapes or curtains. There are some types of curtains that can be machine washed on a gentle cycle and dried in dryer on a low setting, while others, such as lined or tailored-made may have to be dry cleaned. When buying curtains, always read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions on how to clean properly and care for them.

• Sheer curtains. These curtains are made from a very delicate fabric that requires special handling. They can be dry cleaned, as well as cleaned at home by placing them in a warm wash, using a washing detergent. Allow the window coverings to soak for 10 to 15 minutes then wash on a gentle cycle. Curtains can also be placed in a mesh sack for greater protection while washing and drying. Curtains do not have to be completely dried before taking out and re-hanging.
